Unfortunately 'idiots' provide evidence of their existence all over the place. In politics as Ron Burns alerts the world to, the stubbornness of idiocy is beyond relief. In an autocracy, its idiots are disposed of summarily albeit in questionable ways. Therefore in a democracy an alternative needs to be found.
In a representative democracy densely populated with idiots finding a way forward is daunting. Nonetheless, in deliberative direct democratic system opportunities to call out 'idiocy' may well offer a productive way forward.
Unfortunately bureaucrats operating as self appreciative functionaries are blighted by their various unacknowledged inabilities. Looking away is dangerous!
