Now that we have entered the ‘gunna’ period of local government elections – ‘candidates are gunna do this and that when elected’ – one would hope that they have all read the council’s Delegations Register which, in Launceston’s case, has been operational since 2 May 2022.
It’s an interesting read for ratepayers also.
There are 76 pages of functions that past elected members have passed to the chief executive officer/general manager and from him/her to council officers and committees. That means there are 76 pages of functions that elected members have no say it.
Further, it seems that if an elected member seeks a review of the delegations, he/she runs into the brick wall of council officer intransigence.
To now say that local government is the democratic system closest to the people is merely to have a hollow laugh.
